This weekend, Podgórze will take on the glamour of swinging 1920s New York, in a celebration of Gilda Gray, the Kraków born singer and actress who introduced a dance called the Shimmy to America.
Gilda, born Marianna Michalska in 1901, went to the states at the tender age of eight. Ten years later she was wowing audiences in New York, and was well on the way to becoming a stage sensation. Nevertheless, she never forgot her Polish roots, and worked to raise money for war effort ‘back home’ in the 1940s.
She will be remembered on September 28, at Fabryka Bombek, ul Dęmbowskiego 1, at the launch of the Podgórze open weekend. Expect music, fun, and oh so much glam – and don’t forget your fancy dress! Event starts at 7pm.
