The new academic year officially begins on Monday, when professors of the Jagiellonian University take part in a traditional march through Kraków.
The event, which happens on October 1 each year, is preceded by Mass at the collegiate church of St Anne (Kolegiata Św. Anny). The professors then march from the oldest building of the university – Collegium Maius – to Auditorium Maximum. The march passes the Liberty Oak tree, planted in 1919 outside Collegium Novum, where the rector of the university, Prof. dr hab. Wojciech Nowak, will lay a wreath.
Streets on the route will be closed for the duration of the march, and thousands of spectators are expected to turn out to see the professors in the academic finery.
