Kraków’s councillors have formally launched the city’s bid to host the Winter Olympics in 2022 – with a near unanimous vote in the town hall, in favour of the project.
Hot on the heels of the success of the Euro 2012 football championships, the city now hopes to boost its sporting reputation by linking with the Polish winter capital of Zakopane, and with neighbouring Slovakia, in the joint Olympic bid. If successful, Kraków would host ice hockey, ice skating and curling events, amongst others. Zakopane would get cross-country ski-ing, ski jumping and biathlon, and alpine events would take place in Slovakia.
The Polish Olympic Committee and the government support the bid, which got the green light on Saturday. The next Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia, in 2014.
