Hero Janowicz finally felled by Ferrer

He had already beaten Andy Murray and four other of the 20 best male tennis players in a meteoric streak to the final of the Paris Masters, but Spain’s David Ferrer proved just too much for Poland’s new tennis ace Jerzy Janowicz.

But the 21-year-old made sure he went down fighting, only losing 6-4 6-3 in today’s final. And the youngster can take at least some consolation from his astonishing tournament performance, rising from 64th in the world to 26th.

And his route to the final did not go unnoticed by the highest office in Poland; President Bronisław Komorowski called Janowicz to congratulate him – though the modest Pole would not comment to media questions about the conversation.
