EXCLUSIVE: Wielopole night club disaster – Kraków owners face prosecution

Two men face criminal charges and up to five years in prison, in relation to a near-tragedy at a packed Kraków night spot a year ago.

Grzegorz G and Zenon O are accused of organising an event which endangered the lives and health of members of the public, after the stairs collapsed at the Kitsch-Caryca-Łubu-Dubu night club complex at ulica Wielopole 15.

The accident happened when the clubs were full of Saturday night party-goers, at around 2.30am on November 6 2011. Both men deny the charges.

Eleven people were injured during the accident, as concrete stairs gave way. Clubbers were treated at Kraków hospitals, and firefighters from the city worked until dawn to rescue others from the upper floors of the club complex.

Following an investigation, prosecutors in Kraków allege that renovation work in the building weakened the structure of the staircase, causing the collapse.
