Man and teen arrested over Kraków cemetery thefts

A teenage girl and a 26-year-old man have been arrested in connection with thefts of memorial crosses from Kraków’s Rakowicki cemetery.

Police stopped the man while they were searching for the 16-year-old girl, a runaway from a city care home. The homeless man was hiding a rucksack at the time, which contained almost 25kg of brass crosses. Officers said the girl had been keeping watch as the crosses were stolen.

A spokeswoman for Małopolska police said the crosses were stolen to be melted down and sold on as scrap metal. If convicted of theft, the man could be jailed for up to five years. The girl will be dealt with by the juvenile court.
