A decision on the future of what would be Poland’s second largest sports stadium is expected by March.

Renovation work to make Stadion Śląski in Chorzów into a 55,000-seater began in 2009. However, an accident in 2011, in which elements of the roof broke, forced a delay in completing the work.  The building inspectorate in Śląsk said on January 16 that a decision on whether to continue the work or demolish the stadium would be issued within 60 days.

The building inspectorate earlier requested assurances that the structure would be safe, which was confirmed by experts from the University of Technology in Gdańsk in December 2012.

The stadium opened in 1956, and has been the official home venue of the Polish national football team. The latest reconstruction work was originally estimated at around 365 million złoty, but delays have increased this to around 500 million zł.
