One of Kraków’s senior planning officials has gone on the record stating that a historic landmark ‘will not be demolished’ – despite pleas from the current owners to be allowed to redevelop the site.
Echo Investments currently owns the former Cracovia Hotel, and wants to demolish it to make way for a shopping centre. Elżbieta Koterba, of the city’s planning department, said the mall plan was fine – but only if it was built in the basement and the hotel was left standing.
The Cracovia, next to the main branch of the National Museum in Kraków, is on the list of the city’s protected buildings, because of its architectural significance. Ms Koterba said the city ‘would never agree’ to demolition, but Echo said that it was ‘past it’s sell-by date’.
