A Kraków priest claims that the late Pope John Paul II may literally have been a son of the city – after uncovering documents suggesting that the pontiff’s mother was born here.
Father Czesław Chrząszcz of Wszystkich Świętych parish found church records that seem to prove that Karoł Wojtyła’s mother, Emilia, was born in Kraków on March 26 1884. He also found evidence that she had been baptised in the city, in the parish of Św. Mikołaj, on April 13 of the same year. It had previously been thought that Emilia was born in Bielsko-Biała.
However, the evidence uncovered by Father Chrząszcz has not yet been proved conclusive. For example, there is no clear documentary proof of the church in which Emilia married, nor of the school she attended.
