A rare, unpublished manuscript by Nobel poet Wisława Szymborska has been auctioned in Kraków for 14,400 złoty.
The manuscript, dated 1944, is an imagined conversation between King Władysław Jagielło and Queen Jadwiga, both of whom are unhappy with their relationship. It is written on eight sides of card, in the poet’s hand, illustrated in medieval illuminated style, and dedicated to a Tadeusz R.
Both the Jagiellonian University library in Kraków and the National Library in Warsaw turned down the right to purchase the manuscript, which was sold to private buyer at Rara Avis. The starting price was 6,000 złoty.
