Chaps, please take a seat – for we’ve some disappointing news for you. Those young ladies who have been flashing their red garters at you of late haven’t fallen for your manly charms… they’re simply following a tradition to mark the run-up to their final exams.
Studniówka is Poland’s version of the school prom – and takes its name from ‘100 days before’. It’s a chance for the students who are about to take their Matura exams and head off for university to let their hair down (and hitch their skirts up), before settling down to a couple of months of revision and hard slog.
For the girls, red garters (czerwone podwiązki) are de rigueur, while the boys are expected to wear suits and ties (but please remember, you’re not James Bond. A tuxedo is definitely out).
Of course, the boys are perfectly entitled to wear red garters too; but if you do, don’t forget to shave your legs first.
