Zbigniew Boniek

Who is Zbigniew Boniek?
The chairman of the Polish Football Association (PZPN).

Why is he in the news?
He has announced that only Polish speakers will be eligible for the national team.

Oh, so that rules me out then:(
Afraid so. Unless you master the language before Friday’s 2014 qualifier against the mighty Ukraine, you’re not going to get the call.

But what about the superstars who already play and don’t speak Polish?
Boniek said that his ruling was not retrospective. So he will keep the likes of Damien Perquis (French) and Ludovic Obraniak (also French).

Polish isn’t such a common language…
You’re right. One would think that, as with the Irish national squad, anyone with a grandmother connected to the national colours would be eligible.

So common sense doesn’t prevail here?
This is football, when has common sense ever prevailed?

Fair point
Surely, you meant to say ‘Masz rację’
