Two horses have died of hunger after their owner went on holiday and left them without food.
The animals were found by animal welfare officers, at a farm just outside Chełm, near Lublin. Officers discovered one horse dead in the snow, and the other died before their eyes.
A spokesman for Stowarzyszenie Chełmska Straż Ochrony Zwierząt confirmed that both had starved to death in great pain. Two others survived by eating hay and snow, and will now be re-homed.
The horses had been kept in a brick building with no windows. Their owner, who was in Austria at the time, faces two years in prison if convicted of animal cruelty.
